We happen to do a lot of work with international clients as well as clients across the country. And they are always surprised by the Valley culture - how we really live and breath technology here. Our language, our sense of humor, our clothes, everything reflects tech. And there is an energy or feeling that everything is happening instantly. We seem to be on the cutting edge of everything - including walking, eating, socializing and playing video games. As one client put it, "Its like you live on your own planet." And we do.
So one thing I encourage out-of-towners to do, is to take in as much of the environment as they can. Add a few days (or weeks) on either side of your trip. Don't worry about sleep. Meet everyone. Check out the after parties, the meetups and the wii parties, as well as the big conferences. Don't skip drinks at Mighty or House of Shields. And don't go to bed once the expo is over. Split up and go to dinner with people you don't know. Introduce yourself to the VC or reporter that may not be the right person for you, but definitely knows the right people. Comment on the blogs, listen to the gossip and get to know the thought leaders. When you are here for such a short amount of time - you really have to make the most of it. You never know where something may lead.
